I have been reading all four chapters of Colossians each day for the last few, and yesterday while reading, I realised “I am reading this as Paul writing to 1st century Christians, and picking up points from that perspective! How different would this be if I read it from the point of view that God is inspiring Paul to write to me personally?” I did, and then it hit me.
It is easy to just get into a ‘habit’ about our Bible reading and it is good to pull ourselves up from time to time and allow the direct work of the Holy Spirit to breathe on our spirit as we read the Word. To aid this I sometimes read the Bible on my knees. Sometimes the ‘outward’ helps the ‘inward’. There are times when Bible reading is study and a ‘mind’ thing, but reading devotionally is a ’spirit’ thing and we need to differentiate.
